WHEN SHOULD I SEE A PSYCHIATRIST?

A person should consult a psychiatrist to seek medical treatment for mental health difficulties that impact on their functioning and quality of life. A person's general practitioner can assist with the decision of whether it is necessary to consult a psychiatrist.

WHAT TO EXPECT

First consultations follow a structured approach of systematic enquiry and history taking that is led by the psychiatrist. This approach is crucial to ensure that all relevant information is obtained to formulate a provisional diagnosis and treatment plan. Unfortunately an open therapy session led by the patient cannot be provided, since information needed for a medical diagnosis and medical decision-making may not be reported by the patient.
