Intellectual disability is a disorder of brain development with multiple possible causes, including genetic, developmental, environmental or a combination of these factors. It is characterised by deficits in both intellectual and adaptive functioning of varying severity, presenting before the age of 18 years. Many psychiatric disorders are common in persons with intellectual disabilities, including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
